Furman Bisher, a legendary sports writer in Atlanta since 1950, has too many well-deserved honors to list, but his friends and colleagues want to add one more very special honor: an annual award for outstanding students at his alma mater.
The Furman Bisher Medal will honor the 1938 UNC journalism graduate and recognize one student every year who exemplifies the passion for sports journalism and community service exhibited by Furman Bisher. A group of Furman's friends and colleagues are behind this effort and have a goal of $100,000. An endowed fund at this level will provide an annual cash prize of $5,000. Recipients will also receive a medal bearing Furman's name and likeness. The nationally renowned UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication will administer the award and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and Hall of Fame has agreed to present the medal and cash prize at its annual awards banquet.
